What is Underfloor Insulation?
Underfloor insulation generally refers to insulation to underneath the ground floor of a home. This is not to be confused with under soffit, under slab or between floors insulation.
It prevents cooling and heating from escaping through the floors. Even a sealed floor will allow the cold and heat to pass through because of the materials thermal transfer. The bigger the temperature difference between inside and outside, the more you’ll notice that you need underfloor insulation.
How to Choose the Best Underfloor Insulation
The right under floor insulation depends on your floor type, climate, and personal needs.
| Insulation Type | Product Example | Best For | Key Features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glasswool Batts | Pink Batts Floor Insulation Batts | Excellent thermal insulation | Energy efficiency, soundproofing, moisture resistance |
| Polyester Batts | Greenstuff Polyester Underfloor Insulation, Bradford™ Polymax Acoustic Insulation Batts | Safe, thermal & acoustic insulation | Good thermal & soundproofing, high moisture resistance |
| Polyester Rolls | Polyester Solutions Underfloor Insulation Roll | DIY-friendly, flexible installation | Good thermal & acoustic properties, high moisture resistance |
| Foil-Faced Acoustic Insulation | AngelStep Gold4 & Gold8 – Acoustic | Premium soundproofing & heat reflection | Reflects radiant heat, very high soundproofing, moisture resistance |
| Soundproofing Panels | AngelStep 220, 48P, 630 – Acoustic | Apartments, vinyl floors & carpet tiles | High soundproofing, thermal insulation, moisture resistance |
| High-Performance Thermal Insulation | Kingspan Aircell Permifloor Insulation, Kingspan Aircell Permifloor 500 Insulation | High energy efficiency & floor insulation | Great thermal insulation, soundproofing, high moisture resistance |
| Rigid Floor Insulation Board | Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floor Board, Expel Polystyrene Underfloor Insulation | High-performance thermal insulation | Excellent thermal insulation, soundproofing, high moisture resistance |
| Earthwool Insulation | Knauf Earthwool Underfloor Insulation Batts | Natural, low-itch insulation | Good thermal & soundproofing, high moisture resistance |

Climate Considerations
Cool-Temperate Climate (Melbourne):
- Cold winters and mild summers mean higher R-values (R2.5 – R3.5) are ideal to retain warmth efficiently.
- Glass wool batts or polyester rolls provide excellent thermal insulation
Warm-Humid Climate (Brisbane & Gold Coast):
- Hot, humid summers and mild winters require breathable insulation that allows airflow while preventing moisture buildup.
- Polyester insulation rolls are a great choice as they are moisture-resistant and mold-resistant.
- Reflective foil insulation can be used to reduce heat buildup in summer while maintaining comfortable temperatures year-round.
Signs Your Home Needs Underfloor Insulation
Here are the top signs you should insulate your floors:
✔️ Your floors feel cold even when the heater is on
✔️ Your energy bills are increasing despite heating/cooling adjustments
✔️ You feel cold drafts around your feet
✔️ Uneven room temperatures – Some areas feel much colder than others
We offer a wide range of underfloor insulation products to suit different climates and energy efficiency goals. For standard applications, our R2.0 underfloor insulation is a popular choice, providing solid thermal performance and comfort. If you’re building in colder regions or want higher insulation performance, our R2.5 underfloor insulation delivers greater resistance to heat flow, helping reduce energy costs year-round.

Underfloor Insulation for Warmer, Quieter Floors
Underfloor insulation sits beneath the ground floor to slow the heat moving between your rooms and the space under the house. Good floor insulation keeps floors warmer in winter, steadier in summer and helps cut the draughts that come up through a suspended timber floor. This range brings together the underfloor products we stock in one place, so you can compare materials, R-values and formats before you buy.
What is underfloor insulation used for?
It suits homes with a suspended floor and a subfloor or crawl space underneath, where the underside of the floor can be reached and insulation fitted between or under the joists. Buyers reach for it to make cold floors more comfortable, to reduce heat loss through the floor and, with the denser products, to soften noise between levels. Because the products fit between or under the joists, the space under the floor needs to be reachable for the work to be done.
- Timber and other suspended ground floors with an accessible subfloor
- Rooms that feel cold underfoot or draughty in winter
- Projects that also want to dull footfall and airborne noise
How do I choose the right one?
The best choice depends on your floor, your climate and whether sound matters as much as warmth. The range covers polyester rolls and batts, glasswool underfloor batts, rigid boards and a reflective air-cell product, so you can match the product to the job. Polyester rolls and batts are soft to handle and non-irritant, glasswool batts are a common choice for timber joists, rigid boards and the reflective air-cell product suit tighter or damp-prone subfloors, and the denser batts double up where noise matters. A higher R-value means more resistance to heat flow, so warmer regions and milder floors often work with a lower rating while colder homes lean higher. If quiet is a priority, compare the denser products in our acoustic insulation range. For noise between storeys rather than under the lowest floor, see between floors insulation.
